Whoa Jowy getting a little deep with this one. Wanted to explore some more lighting effects with this speed painting muting the colours of the environment to make the blimp and graffiti stand out. :P

I have recently been influenced by this incredibility talented artist :iconhuussii: his blend of natural backgrounds with the show characters works so well

From now on I want to produce more actual scenes of the wide world of Equestria using my own style and techniques of digital painting. :)

Check out my ongoing FIM title card project : jowybean.deviantart.com/galler...

I look at something like this and I get the feel of the cover art for a really dark novella, a really awesome video game, or a really deep concept album. As with all forms of conceptual art it tells just enough for a foundation grasp, but spices it up by leaving some aspects open to interpretation. The artist's style gives makes for a piece with depth and atmosphere but I just wish a little more time was spent giving certain aspects a little more detail.

The overall setting seems pretty clear, but feel free to disagree with me. I see an Equestrian dystopian empire in which Nightmare Moon prevailed over the sun. I see a town shackled by the night and Nightmares totalitarian rule over her subjects. The artist provides a really effective and dark atmosphere while giving the work much depth and character. We find this character in the title's subject, the two ponies. The first being the one atop the wall laden with graffiti. The way it is dressed and how it is peering at the dirigible looming over the town suggests that this is a character, likely young, who grew up in this dark world and seeks revolution against the ever watchful eyes of Nightmare.
However, it is the other pony that has me stumped.

As I said, the staple of conceptual art is leaving some things defined by a concept and having some things open for interpretation. For example, the cover art to Dark Side of the Moon is very clear. It is a prism with light entering one side and color going out the other. Very clear, but how does it apply to the music and theme of the album? In this instance the image is clear, but the meaning is not. In this piece the pony lying at the bottom of the wall could have used a little more attention. The artist's style worked for the first pony because it was shrouded in shadow making it more dark and mysterious. This one has more light on it and should be clearer to define. If I had to guess exactly who it was or what it was doing I would have to guess that it is a soldier. The hat it is wearing and the flask next to him makes me think of an old revolutionary soldier, or maybe even a guard for Nightmare's Reich who fell asleep on patrol. I could just as easily be a dirty old bum who fell asleep under a Nightmare patrol dirigible. I guess it could be argued that I'm giving different interpretations of the image, but I would rather be able to clearly see the prism and ponder it's significance than determine it was a prism to begin with.
Not a huge problem, certainly not enough to deter from the overall quality of the picture. Just stumped me, is all.

Cheers,
